Sardinia

Sardinia is a large Mediterranean island with some of Europe's most beautiful beaches, clear water, mountains, villages, local food culture and great differences between the coastal areas. The island is suitable for family holidays, romantic bays and active tours, but requires a little more planning than a compact resort coast.

The northeast has Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena close by, the northwest has Alghero and Stintino, the south has Cagliari, Villasimius and Chia, while the east coast offers more dramatic scenery. Beaches may require parking, short trips on foot or by boat. August is Italian high season and can be expensive and busy.

Best months June and September are often best for beach holidays with warm seas and less pressure
Weather Sardinia has hot, dry summers and mild spring and autumn months. Swimming conditions are normally best from June to September. Wind is an important part of island weather and can influence the choice of beach, especially on open stretches of coast.
Transfer The most important airports are Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero, and the right airport should be chosen according to the coastal area. Public transport exists, but is often inflexible for beach hopping. Renting a car clearly gives the most freedom, especially outside large cities and resort areas.
