Sardinia
Sardinia is a large Mediterranean island with some of Europe's most beautiful beaches, clear water, mountains, villages, local food culture and great differences between the coastal areas. The island is suitable for family holidays, romantic bays and active tours, but requires a little more planning than a compact resort coast.
The northeast has Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena close by, the northwest has Alghero and Stintino, the south has Cagliari, Villasimius and Chia, while the east coast offers more dramatic scenery. Beaches may require parking, short trips on foot or by boat. August is Italian high season and can be expensive and busy.

Destinations in Sardinia
Alghero
Alghero is well suited for couples and families who want a close-to-city beach holiday with an old town, restaurants and excursions along the north-west coast. You get a more local and historical feel than in a pure resort, while beaches and airport logistics are convenient. Car hire is useful if you want to see caves, beaches and villages outside the city.

Cagliari
Cagliari is suitable for those who want to combine city life, restaurants, shopping and the beach in the same stay. Poetto makes the city relevant for sun and swimming, but the holiday profile is more urban than classic resort. This is best for couples and adults who like a local big city feel, with public transport and lots to do without a car.

Isola Rossa
Isola Rossa is suitable for those who want a quiet beach base with a village feel, nice sunsets and a short distance to northern beaches. The area is best for couples and families who want to slow down, not for those who need a lot of shopping or nightlife. Car hire is a good idea if you want to explore more than the village itself and the nearest beaches.

Olbia
Olbia is best suited as a practical city base for north-east Sardinia, with an airport, port, restaurants and access to beaches in the area. It is less idyllic as a pure seaside resort than the surrounding coastal towns, but gives a more local all-year feeling and better logistics. Renting a car or planned transport clearly gives more freedom to Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro and beach hopping.

Pula
Pula is well suited for couples and families who want southern Sardinian small town life, restaurants and access to Nora and nice beaches nearby. The place is more lively than many small villages, but still quieter than Cagliari. A car is recommended if you want to use Pula as a base for Chia, Nora and several beaches along the south coast.

Stintino
Stintino is suitable for those who want turquoise water and some of Sardinia's most famous beaches. It is strong for couples and families who want to stay close to La Pelosa and Asinara excursions, but the beach can be regulated and busy in high season. Car or planned transport is important if you want flexibility beyond the beach area itself.

Tempio Pausania
Tempio Pausania is best for those who want to experience Gallura, cobbled streets, local traditions and a quieter inland environment. This is not a classic bathing base, although Sardinia's coast can be reached by car. Choose the place for local feel, food and excursions, not for beach right outside the hotel or simple resort life.
